Bethany

The little village of Bethany is on the southeastern slope of the Mt. of Olives about 2 miles from Jerusalem. It was the home to Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, and the setting for a number of New Testament events.

The Tomb of Lazarus is a popular site for Christians visiting Bethany.

Jesus returned to Bethany after His triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Mark 11:11), and it was near Bethany where Jesus ascended into heaven. (Luke 24:50) The Chapel of the Ascension was built there to remind us of that event.

  1. Is this his first tomb, or his second tomb? Or did he re-use the first one? Just wondering.

    1. This is the traditional tomb from which Lazarus was originally raised.

  2. Lazarus second tomb, his church, and his remains (his scull being considered a holy relic in the Greek Orthodox church), are all to be found in the church in Larnaka, Cyprus.
He apparently fled there after Jesus resurrection, and the Pharisees plotted to kill him.
