(The Antonia Fortress at the Jerusalem Model)
The Antonia Fortress was built by Herod the Great. It was an imposing structure, which protected the Temple Mount on its most vulnerable north side. It also served as a monitoring station for potential uprisings in the Temple area. When Paul was accused of bringing a Gentile beyond the Court of the Gentiles, a riot began. Paul's life was spared when Roman officers arrested him and took him to the fortress. (See Acts 21:27-22:29)
Herod named the fortress Antonia after his friend, Mark Antony.
All that remains of the fortress today are some Herodian ashlar stones at the northwest corner of the Temple Mount.
