Jerusalem - Temple Mount: Dome of Ascension

Don't let the name fool you. The Dome of Ascension has nothing to do with the ascension of Jesus. It was originally built by Crusaders in the 12th century and is thought to have served as a baptismal chapel. When Saladin defeated the Crusaders, the dome was dedicated to Muhammad's ascension  to heaven (a Muslim tradition from around the year 621 AD).

Today, the building serves as an office for the Muslim Waqf—the Jerusalem Waqf is a trust for controlling and managing Islamic properties in Jerusalem.
