Early church tradition has the apostle John leaving Jerusalem and going to Ephesus where he remained to the end of his life. While living there, Domitian exiled him to Patmos from which he wrote the Apocalypse (the Book of Revelation - the unveiling of Christ).
Domitian’s reign came to an end in 96 AD when he was assassinated. He was succeeded by his advisor, Nerva, who pardoned John, and allowed him to return to Ephesus.
The Basilica of St. John was built by Justinian I in 565 AD over the traditional grave of the beloved apostle.
