Egypt had been occupied by foreign powers for about 100 years before the New Kingdom (circa 1550-1150 BC) emerged with its capital city, Thebes. Many temples were built, both large and small, but none compared to the Temple of Karnak.

The temple of Karnak complex was the center of Pharaoh Amun worship, along with that of his wife, Mut, and their son, Khons. Construction on it continued for a period of about 1,300 years, under thirty successive pharaohs. Each one added their special flare; a new temple, shrine, or obelisk with inscriptions.
