The Jordan River is the major river of ancient Israel. It originates from the slopes of Mount Hermon, in the north of Israel. Along the way, it feeds two lakes: Hula Lake and the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret).

The Yardenit is a baptismal site on the Jordan River. It gets its name from the Hebrew, Yarden. Yardenit is the diminuative form of Yarden, the Hebrew word for Jordan. Yarden comes from the verb root word Yarod, meaning to descend. That is truly descriptive of the Jordan as it descends from Mt. Hermon (appr. 9,000 feet in elevation) to the Dead Sea (appr. 1,300 feet below sea level).

Yardenit was built (1981) by Kibbutz Kinneret where the Jordan leaves the Sea of Galilee in the south. The site is still run by Kibbutz Kinneret and welcomes over a half million tourists each year.

It is a favorite spot of many to be baptized, and is believed by some to be the place where Jesus was baptized by John.
