The most notable ruin of ancient Corinth is the Temple of Apollo, built on a hill overlooking the remains of the Roman marketplace (agora). Seven of the original 38 Doric columns still stand, and it is one of the oldest stone temples in Greece, probably built over an earlier temple on the same spot. The temple was still functioning in the time of Apostle Paul (50s AD) but was eventually destroyed by earthquakes.
According to Pausanias [writing between 155 to 180 AD], there was a bronze statue of Apollo in the Temple. Since two New Testament letters were written to the church in Corinth [1st and 2nd Corinthians], we understand the importance of this city in the time of Paul
