The Marble Road was one the main thoroughfares of Ephesus. It stretched about a quarter of a mile, connecting the Magnesian Gate [in the south] with the Koressos Gate [in the northwest]. For all practical purposes, the Marble Road was the entrance to the Grand Theater for anyone coming from the Library of Celsus

It dates back to the 1st century AD with a 5th century ‘upgrade,’ when someone named Eutropius provided the marble blocks for which it got its name. Grooves from tens of thousands of chariots and wagons are still visible to this day.

The western edge of the Marble Road was lined with a porch that was about six feet high. It was built in the time of Nero (54-68 AD).
