Jordan - Mt. Nebo

Mt. Nebo is the peak from which Moses saw the "Promised Land" after being told by God, "You will not cross over there." He had led the Children of Israel in the desert for 40 years when he stood on the summit and saw what awaited the people of God.

On a clear day, you can see the panorama that Moses viewed: the Dead Sea, the Jordan River Valley, Jericho, Bethlehem, and the distant hills of Jerusalem.

Mt. Nebo is in western Jordan. It's not a high as some may think, about 2,700 feet, but it looks down to about 4,000 feet at the Dead Sea (which is about 1,300 feet below sea level).

The cross-like sculpture, a modern replica of the "brazen serpent in the wilderness," has become the symbol for Mt. Nebo. During the Exodus many rebellious Israelites died during a plague. God instructed Moses to erect a bronze serpent on a pole to stop the plague. All those who looked up at the raised serpent were healed.
