View of the Temple Mount from Mt. Scopus (looking southwesterly)
Mt. Scopus is strategically located to the northeast of Jerusalem. Its Hebrew name is Har Ha'Tzofim meaning, Mountain of the Watcher. The Latin name, Scopus, means, Lookout, and is fitting in that it was a vantage point for the Roman Army when it crushed the First Jewish Revolt in 70 AD. Several Roman legions used it as their base of operations during the seige.
Today, Mt. Scopus is the home of the Hebrew University Campus, the Hadassah Hospital, Brigham Young University (extension), Augusata Victoria Church (and hospice), and a WWI cemetery for British soldiers killed in the Middle East.
