Acre is not a well-known biblical city. It is mentioned in the book of
Judges as one of the cities that Asher was unable to defeat. It is located
about 15 miles north of Haifa, and because it had a good natural harbor, it
achieved some importance from early times. The city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the
world, dating back to the time of the Pharaoh Thutmose III (1504-1450 BC).
Acre is best known for its role as the main stronghold of the
Crusaders, who conquered the city in 1104 AD. Before then, Egyptians,
Phoenicians, Persians, Greeks and Muslims had defeated it. Over the years, Acre
has been known as Akko, Acco, and Accho.
Paul visited the city at the end of his third missionary journey. At
that time, Acre was known as Ptolemais, named after the Egyptian King, Ptolemy
(see Acts 21:7).
Acre is the holiest
city of the Baha’i Faith. It was home to Baha Allah, its prophet. His tomb is
located in a park just outside of town along the Acre/Nahariya Road.
