Christ Church is not an ancient church, yet it is
a prominent Protestant church in Jerusalem. It is an Anglican church, dating
from 1849—the first Protestant church in the Middle East—and the first church
in modern times to implement the use of bells to call its worshippers. It may
also be the only Christian church purposely built to resemble a synagogue.
Christ Church is seen as you enter the Jaffa Gate
(the only entrance to the Old City through the Western Wall), opposite the
Citadel of David. Early on, it became known as the “Jewish Protestant Church,”
because of its efforts to bring Jews to Christianity.
Currently it celebrates both Jewish and Christian
feasts and Holy Days. There is also a Messianic Hebrew and an Arabic fellowship
that meets there.
Christ Church also runs a Guest House for
pilgrims.
