St. Catherine’s Monastery is also the home to the Well
of Moses, also known as the Well of Jethro, where Moses is said to have met his
future wife, Zipporah.
According to Exodus 2:15-21, Moses was resting by
the well when the seven daughters of Jethro (also called Reuel) came to draw
water. Moses came to their defense when some shepherds drove them away.
Moses was then invited to the home of Jethro, and
in gratitude, Jethro gave Zipporah to him in marriage.
After all these years, the well is still one of the
monastery’s main sources of water.
