The first site in
southern Jordan mentioned in the Exodus is Ezion-geber (Number 33-35).
Ezion-geber and Elath (or Eloth) were port towns located at or near the Red Sea
port of Aqaba. They are associated with King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba,
and the wars between the kings of Judah and Edom (Deuteronomy 2:8, 1st Kings
9:26 2nd Kings 14:22).
Aqaba is Jordan’s only port city. In 1965, Jordan's King Hussein traded over 2,300 square miles of its interior land to Saudi Arabia in exchange for 7 1/2 miles of prime Red Sea coastline.
