Some
important events in the lives of Isaac’s twin sons, Jacob and Esau, took place
in ancient Jordan. Modern-day Pella is a possible site Penuel, the place where
Jacob wrestled with God and also where his name was changed from Jacob to Israel
(Genesis 32:24-30). A massive temple was discovered at Pella, which may indicate
it was the ancient Penuel.
After
he reconciled with Esau, Jacob continued with his family to Canaan where he became
the father of the twelve tribes. Esau remained in southern Jordan. The Bible describes
Esau as the father of the Edomites in the land of Seir—also called Edom.
