Starting with the 18th Dynasty c. 1570 (time of Moses) through the 20th Dynasty c. 1060 (time of Saul), the Valley of the Kings and Queens became the necropolis of the pharaohs. Abandoning the Pyramid type tombs of Sakkara and Giza, they began to build massive monuments in caves along the Nile River.

The Valley of the Kings and Queens is located opposite Thebes/Luxor on the west side of the Nile. The Kings area has 63 tombs as of this writing, while the Queen section, just to the southwest, has 80 tombs
