The
walls of Jerusalem and its gates have expanded and contracted through the
centuries. The walls and gates you see today were, for the most part, built by
Suliman the Magnificent, circa 1535 AD.
There is
only one gate on the western wall.

The Jaffa
Gate
This gate got its name
because of an ancient road leading from Jerusalem to the port city of Jaffa
(Joppa). It is the only gate on the western side of the Old City.
It is second in size and
importance only behind the Damascus Gate. Entering the Jaffa Gate will lead you
to the Armenian Quarter, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Old City
Market.
