One of the remarkable features at Abu Simbel is that the temple is designed so that twice each year, on February 22 and October 22, the first rays of the sun shine down the length of the temple cave and illuminate the back wall of the innermost shrine and the statues of the four gods seated there — Ptah, Amun-Ra, the deified Ramses II, and Re-Horakhte.
