Talk about large, the Western Palace was the largest building on Masada measuring over 4,000 square meters! In Herod’s day, it served as the administration center of the fortress, as well as his ceremonial palace.

The building had a royal apartment, a workshop, storerooms, and an administrative wing. The royal apartment was built around a central courtyard. Several rooms have spectacular mosaic floors as seen in the photos. The largest room has a decorative floral and geometric pattern with square bands. This may have been Herod’s throne room when he was in residence at Masada.
