The Morocco Gate [Mugrabi or Gate of the Moors] is located near the southern end of the Western Wall. It was built over the Barclay Gate, which, over the centuries, had been covered by dirt and debris.
Our guide told us that at the time, the local residents in that area of Jerusalem had come from Morocco, hence the name. The Morocco Gate is open and it is the only entrance to the Temple Mount for non-Muslims.
When I first went to the Holy Land in 1969, the Morocco Gate was nearly at ground level. After the Six-Day War in 1967, archaeologists began excavations at the Kotel [Western Wall Plaza]. As the debris was removed, a ramp had to be installed to get to the gate.
