From the Forum, the colonnaded main street, the Cardo Maximus, leads you through the center of the town. The paving is original and you can still see the ruts caused by chariot wheels. On either side of the road you see crumbling pillars, column blocks, and capitals waiting, like jigsaw pieces, to be put together.
The Roman Cardo was a north/south oriented street in its cities, military camps, and colonies. The main cardo was called cardo maximus, an integral component of city planning. They were lined with shops and vendors, and served as a hub of economic life.
