Jerusalem - Dominus Flevit

Jesus wept” (John 11.35) is the shortest verse in the Bible and was written of Jesus when He went to Bethany to see His dear friends at the passing of Lazarus.

Dominus Flevit also means The Lord wept or The Cry of the Lord, and is located on the upper western slope of the Mt. of Olives.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not” (Matthew 23:37 ESV).

Dominus Flevit Church, shaped like a tear drop to symbolize the Lord's tears, is believed to mark the place where Jesus' mourning over Jerusalem occurred.

The current church is situated on the ruins of a 7th century church, some mosaics of which still remain. There is a magnificent view of the Temple Mount from its western window.

An ancient Jewish tomb was uncovered during the construction of the church. It was dated as early as the 1st century. Inside the tomb, many ossuaries (bone boxes) can be seen by visitors.
