One can only imagine the engineering and labor it took to build Herod the Great’s palace/villa on the steep, north facing cliff of Masada. There was a wall separating the palace from the fortress of Masada, giving Herod total privacy and security.

The luxurious palace consisted of three terraces, with a natural rock-cut staircase connecting them. The upper terrace was the actual living quarters. Herod had a semi-circular “deck” built in front of the palace that provided a most spectacular view of the Dead Sea valley.

Both the middle and lower terraces served as places of entertainment and relaxation for Herod and his special guests. The lower terrace had a small, private bathhouse.
