Avdat was one of the three major cities along the Nabatean Spice Route—a caravan route that brought herbs, spices, perfumes, and other treasures from the Arabian Peninsula to Gaza by way of Petra and the Negev. It is situated on a hill about 1,900 feet above sea level in the Wilderness of Zin. After conquering Avdat, the Romans fortified it to strengthen their southern border.
Today, Avdat is a UNESCO site and national park where people can observe Nabatean, Roman, Byzantine, and Christian influence in the area.
In 1973, Avdat served as the location for the filming of "Jesus Christ, Superstar."
