Hierapolis, meaning "High" or “Sacred City,” is located at present-day Pamukkale in south central Turkey. In New Testament times it was part of the tri-city area of Laodicea, Colossae, and Hierapolis. This connection between the cities lies behind Paul’s reference to Hierapolis and Laodicea in his epistle to the Colossians. (Colossians 4:13)
It was known for its healing hot
springs. The ruins of a gate complex—two towers and three arches that opened onto a
paved street about a mile and a half long—is a monument of the city's
former majesty.
According to ancient church tradition, Phillip, the original disciple, and his family moved to Hierapolis before 70 A.D. Because they refused to recognize Domitian as Lord, they were martyred for their faith. The remains of a building known as the Martyrium of Philip, rests on a hill overlooking Hierapolis.
