Israel’s Patriarchs and Matriarchs are buried in
the Cave of Machpelah at Hebron: Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob
and…Leah. But what about Jacob’s beloved Rachel?
Rachel was not buried in Hebron. We learn from the
book of Genesis that Jacob and his family were making their way to Bethlehem,
where Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin. (See Genesis 35) She was buried on
the Jerusalem/Hebron road, just north of Bethlehem.
At the time of her death, Jacob erected a pillar at
her grave. Today, her tomb is a small building with a white dome.
