The High Priest was in charge of
the Temple (or tabernacle) worship. He was known by several names: the priest (Ex. 31:10), the anointed
priest (Lev. 4:3), the priest who is chief among his brethren (Lev. 21:10),
chief priest (2 Chron. 26:20), and High Priest (2 Kings 12:10).
The priesthood was a hereditary
office based on the lineage of Aaron (Ex. 29:29-20). Originally intended to be
a lifetime commitment, as early as Solomon’s reign, a High Priest was dismissed
for political reasons (1 Kings 2:27).
High Priests had to maintain a high
degree of holiness—always ritually pure and ready to serve the Lord.
