According to the Palestinian National Tourism Authority and Department of Antiquities, this tree is over two thousand years old. It is called the "Tree of Zacchaeus," remembering the time Jesus passed through Jericho on His way to Jerusalem.

In Luke's account [19:1-9], Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, wanted to see Jesus as He passed through Jericho. Being "small in stature," he couldn't see over the crowds of people so he climbed up in a sycamore tree in order to look over them.

As Jesus passed the tree He noticed Zacchaeus and told him to come down. Jesus went with Zacchaeus back to his house and after his encounter with Jesus, Zacchaeus became a Christ follower andgave half of his riches to the poor.

Jesus said, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:9-10
