This is the Southern entry into Jerash. For centuries, the city lay buried underground, well preserved. Major excavations got under way in the 1920s and continue to this day. Although a large part of the city has been unearthed, it is estimated that more than 75% of the city is still to be discovered. When you enter the city through the South Gate, you become aware of the immense size of Jerash and the grandeur of its monuments.
